This is a picture from the historic village of Lafayette. It is a picture of the mill store, Davis & Slocum, a historic general store and post office located in the village of Lafayette in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. This establishment serviced the mill workers in the area by offering a variety of goods, including dry goods, groceries, boots, shoes, hats, and caps, as depicted on historical postcards. The building is still standing today as an apartment house.
The Rodman Mill, central to the Lafayette village in North Kingstown, RI, was a cornerstone of the Rodman family’s 19th-century textile empire. Rodman purchased the site, with a long history of industry, in 1847 as a cotton mill, but quickly retooled to utilize wool. He expanded and built the large brick mill and associated structures in 1877. At its peak Rodman Manufacturing in Lafayette employed more than 500 people.
